21 Century Learners.

Before we talk about the 21 century learners' characteristics let me present 3 quotes that i found while surfing on the internet. I think these quotes are something to reflect upon.

Barnett BerryFounder and CEO, Center for Teaching Quality

"Twenty-first-century learning means that students master content while producing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from a wide variety of subjects and sources with an understanding of and respect for diverse cultures."

Karen Cator
Director, Office of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education

"
Success in the 21st century requires knowing how to learn. Students today will likely have several careers in their lifetime. They must develop strong critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills in order to be successful in an increasingly fluid, interconnected, and complex world."

Susan Rundell Singer
Laurence McKinley Gould Professor of Natural Sciences, Carleton College

"
Adaptability, complex communication skills, non-routine problem solving, self-management, and systems-thinking are essential skills in the 21st-century workforce."

Here's a list of the charactertistics of a 21 century student.

Competences of the 21 century students
>Collaboration
>Critical Thinking
>Digital Literacy

Skills of the 21 century students.
>Evaluate
>Syntethize
>Produce

How does a 21 century student learn?

Internet, free software, digital developing tools and
Social Networks.
They want to work in boardless learning territories,
where everything can be reached.

Role of the teacher? "Orchestator of Learning".
He helps the students
to turn information into wisdom, by let them decide whether if the
knowledge it's relevant for them or not. Schools should stop being buldings in which students go as receptors, and should become places of exchange and enlightening.

The Social Network (2010)

In 2010, the amount of people on facebook was dramatically surpassing the amount of people using any other social network or internet service.  Facebook, was the future knocking our doors; and it seemed that everyone greeted it with undeniable acceptance.

Taking advantage from the unquestionable fame of this world phenomenon. A movie was made. Its creators decided to simply call it "The social network". A movie that intended to tell the history behind the creation of Facebook, the most popular social network of all time; and its creator Mark Zuckerberg, the youngest billionarie of modern times.

The history begins where that billion dollar idea was originated, in the university of Harvard. There, Mark Zuckerberg, a brilliant student with an average social life, an average girlfriend, and average economic status; encountered himself with the proposal to develop a network to connect the whole university. That ambitious plan was planned to go even further and connect Harvard to another campuses. With this idea, the trigger inside that genius mind was pulled and the development of "the facebook" had started.

The movie invites us to be witnesses of the birth of this website, but also hooks us with an intense as well as funny way to present the drama behind these kind of bussiness.  The conflict between Mark and the principal sponsor of his idea, Eduardo Saverin (his former best friend), who demanded an "underserved" credit for his contributions to the creation of facebook (underserved according to Mark's opinion.); And with the presentation of charming and appealing characters, such as Sean Parker (napster developer) the movie is a recipe for success.

In my personal opinion, this movie is relevant because it narrates an event that has left its mark in modern history, for good.  Everyone is affected by the rise of the social networks, everyone is now connected to each other, we can be in touch with everyone. I cannot help but to think that the world is now a tinier place because of the social networks and that long distances doesn't mean anything anymore. Now we can go through the oceans and talk to people that are thousands of miles away form us, just by clicking a button.

There's definitely a future waiting for us, but if the advances of techonology nowadays have given us a modern wonder such as facebook, my imagination goes wild thinking about what the future will have to offer.

Did you know?

We saw this video in our Virtual Communities Class and since we saw it i couldn't stop thinking about it. To be sincere, i felt kind of overwhelmed because of it. I think this video shows how the humanitiy is evolving as the time goes by. It's pretty awesome to realize how things change within the time flow. Evolution isn't a matter of biology anymore.

The humanity has reached a point in its history in which evolution is something that's self-inflicted and it's being caused by our actions. The world as we kwnow it, it's in constant change, and tomorrow or perhaps the day after, we are going to face a completely different reality.
But, why is that?

I guess it's all about knowledge, information, and the development of our mind. Nowadays we have access to everything without actually having to make a dramatic effort to get it. We can learn about whatever we want only by clicking a button in our computer, and we can get in touch with whoever is connected to the network. Our world, has now became a system. A system, that's getting finer than ever.

What's a Virtual Community?

In order to explain what a virtual community is, first we need to understand the meaning of the concept of community itself. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a community is a group of people living together, having interests in common. However, the concept of virtual community does not necessary refers to share the same physical space; a virtual community is more related to share interests and goals.

Wren (2006) a writer from whatis.com defines a virtual community as “A virtual community is a community of people sharing common interests, ideas, and feelings over the Internet or other collaborative networks.” By reading this definition we can infer that, the people involved interact through internet and share their knowledge, opinion or materials.

I hope that this explanation helps you to better understand this term and get familiarized with it, because it’s the core concept of this virtual communities course.
